I saw
Kari did this a few days ago and I've meant to swipe it (again), so here's the official Joe-Mammy iPod shuffle game
Photographic -
Depeche ModeRecent acquisition. I hadn't heard much of D.M. before but I like what I've heard. Now if the lyrics weren't so damn silly: "
I take pictures/photographic pictures" are you serious? Great synth sounds though.
Insane in the Membrane -
Cypress HillAhh, nostalgic grooves from my younger days. I swear that drum line loop has been used a kajillion times since then, but it's still fun. Don't you know I'm loco?
Love Will Tear Us Apart -
Joy DivisionIan Curtis doing his melodic half moan over a bass line that would appear in New Order songs for decades to come. They just don't make angst like this anymore.
My Man -
They Might Be GiantsA song about a spinal injury. Only TMBG. The freaky thing about this song is that the words I incorrectly thought they were singing at points actually really left an impression, especially "the ghosts of an ocean" (actual lyrics "the coasts of an ocean") proving that it's not what you say, it's what some knucklehead thinks you may have said...
My Sympathies -
AP2The chorus "it's got nothing to do with me..." is good stuff. It's supposed to be an angry song, but it just sounds lonely, which isn't a bad thing, either.
and finally:
Dig -
Adam AgainEven over ten years after I first heard this song, it still kicks my ass. Funky, soulful, mournful and resolute all at the same time. Makes me wish Gene Eugene was still around so I could hear it live again sometime. That and it forever sold me on the sound of the Fender Rhodes. "There was a time that I might have surrendered, but not now" is one of the greatest culminations of a song I've ever heard.
